iowa, he easily won. ron paul finished second followed by john hunts man and newt gingrich. susan mcginnis is in new hampshire with more. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. after winning only the first two contests, mitt romney is already talking as if he is the nominee. meanwhile, the other candidates are struggling to emerge as the conservative alternative to romney. mitt romney hopes to continue his winning streak down south. >> we made history. >> he'll head to south carolina today after scoring another victory last night in the new hampshire primary. the former massachusetts governor briefly soaked up the win before launching a blistering attack on president obama. >> this president has enacted job killing regulations. i'll eliminate them. he lost our aaa credit rating. i'll restore it. he passed obama care. i'll repeal it. >> romney leads the polls in south carolina. but faces a tougher conservative crowd there. >> he certainly had a clear-cut

victory. but we're nibbling at his heels. >> second place finisher ron paul played off attacks from his critics. >> they are telling the truth because we are dangerous to the stat status quo of this country. >> after spending weeks campaigning in new hampshire, jon huntsman came in third. he's promising to take the fight to south carolina. >> third place is a ticket to ride, ladies and gentlemen. >> i think the fact that he's moving forward in south carolina is going to cause a lot of people to really take another look at him. >> after disappointing finishes, newt gingrich and rick santorum are counting on south carolina's conservative base to give them a boost. >> in the next couple of days, make a list of every person you know in south carolina. >> we can win this race. >> rick perry, who skipped new hampshire, has been concentrating on drumming up support in south carolina. he said the results show a race is still wide open. >> rick perry is still hanging

in there. he's hoping terrell, that being a southerner that south carolina will be a little bit kinder to him than these first two disasters. >> susan mcginnis in manchester. thank you so much. good to see you this morning. exit polls indicate romney had the support of 42% of voters in new hampshire who say they were conservative. 45% of new hampshire voters ho say the economy was the most important consideration supported romney. he received the most support for whom-electability was the top concern. 62% of them back romney. correspondent bob schieffer has more on what this means. >> there's no doubt about it. the big winner is the man who won. that is mitt romney. he not only won, but he sort of met expectations, got about 40% of the vote. i think that's what people thought he would have gotten. if he had gotten considerably less than that, there would have been a real question about whether he was able to put together enough to finally wind up with the nomination. but i think he's pretty much in

the cat-bird seat now. he's won both the iowa caucuses and new hampshire. first time any republican other than the presidential candidate, an incumbent president, has been able to do that. the other big winner is jon huntsman. he was poll around 1% or 2%. he winds up in third place, pretty good finish for him. he said he would probably drop out if he didn't finish at least third. you cannot discount ron paul who winds up with 20-something percent of the vote or something close to that. you know, he continues to do that. i don't know many people, independent observers, who think he's going to get the nomination, but as long as he continues to pick up this much of the vote in these contests, it keeps the other opposites of mitt romney from being able to assemble a larger share of the

vote. so mitt romney leaves here, he got kicked around a little bit. but he leaves here as the winner and he's clearly now in the cat-bird seat. this is bob schieffer in new hampshire. as a reporter, campaign 2012, heads to the first primary in the south. south carolina. the political climate much different there. unemployment is much higher than either iowa or new hampshire and relinl on plays a big role in elections. south carolina may be the last hope for conservatives to stop mitt romney as well. randall pinkston reports from columbia. >> reporter: 6,000 people attend the historic first baptist church in columbia, south carolina. making it an important stop for presidential candidates. >> jesus is speaking to us. >> the reverend is the pastor. many in his congregation have not yet chose n a candidate in the upcoming primary. >> today i asked our staff, i said how many of you decided who your candidate is? no one raised their hand.

>> rick perry is banking on winning over some of the church-goers. he's already here in south carolina ahead of the other republican hopefuls who are still in new hampshire. perry is making sure the evangelicals know he shares their faith. >> i understood as a young 14-year-old, as i gave my life to jesus christ, that was going to be a central part of who i am. >> 55% of the republican voters in south carolina are evangelicals. more than double the percentage in new hampshire. that means the candidates will be trying to win over a very different audience here. mitt romney knows the challenge ahead. a mormon, he finished fourth here in 2008. he's now leading the polls. but voters like first baptist church member ann marie green aren't sold on him or anyone else. >> one of the things we don't have in a candidate right now is somebody that gets voters >> about 70% of republican voters in south carolina say they want a president who shares

their religious believes. randall pinkston, cbs news, columbia, south carolina. we go overseas now. another nuclear scientist was killed this morning. two people riding a motorcycle in tehran attached magnetic bombs to the scientist's car. it was similar to earlier attacks ghens other scientists. it's reported he was a scientist at the enrichment facility. two others were severely wounded. they blame israel and the united states. the u.s. carried out a drone strike that mistaken -- the strike took place last night in the al qaeda stronghold. four suspected militants were killed. take a quick break on this wednesday morning. when we come back, occupy wall street protesters in new york return to zuccotti park. plus, first lady michelle obama responds to a controversial new book alleging she had a rocky relationship with top advisers. first scott pelley has a preview of cbs evening news.

index edged up half a percent. the hang seng also rose .75%. wall street hopes to continue the strong start to 2012 today. stocks hit a five-month high yesterday. the dow gained nearly 70 points while the nasdaq added close to 26. we'll get two important earnings reports today. grocery store company super value's report could be an indication of where food prices are headed and home builder earnings could give us insight into the state of the housing market. treasury secretary timothy geithner is continuing his visit to chien a he's meeting with the premiere this morning. he's trying to gain support for oil export sanctions against iran. meanwhile, oil from north america could be headed to china. officials from trans canada corps say if the united states does not approve the keystone xl pipeline it will look to sell oil to asian market.

modern and vintage planes in action. there are all kinds of safety rules but serious accidents do happen. as tara mergener reports, federal authorities are looking at ways to make things safer. >> air show accidents like the one in reno, nevada, has the national transportation safety board reevaluating safety rules. 11 people died last september when a world war ii era plane crashed. 70 more were hurt. mike houghton heads the group that sponsors the show. >> times haven't been easy. we're looking forward to pulling together all the elements necessary to operate the event in 2012. >> houghton and other executives questioned at tuesday's hearing say safety is always the top priority. >> if i don't believe an act going to be safe or i see they're not doing what they're supposed to do, i knock them off. they land. >> with 75 deadly air show accidents in 25 years, the ntsb is looking at ways to make public events safer.

>> and we want to make sure that the limitations of the human and the machine are respected and that when it comes to spectators and crowds, that they are protected. >> lieutenant colonel gary cook has flown in dozens of air shows and has been a safety official at others. he says the rules designed to keep pilots and spectators safe are always evolving. >> the accidents happen. it's unfortunate. but the benefit we can learn is what can we do differently in future air shows. >> more than 10 million people attend air shows every year and the ntsb says it's paying attention to what goes wrong and learning from those mistakes. tara mergener for cbs news, washington. at the airport in sacramento, california a deputy used a taser to subdue a passenger who entered a secure area. the man refused to go through the screening process to retrieve an item he left behind. the deputy stunned him three

times with the taser. then took him to jail. talk about unruly passenger. look at what happens to a security officer at the airport in bangkok, thailand. on the right side of the screen. customs officials objects to being patted down. then shoves the officer and boxes his ears several times. who does ha? this is security video that made it on to you-tube, the official has been demoted. two months after authorities reopened the investigation into the death of actress natalie wood. police say there is no new evidence in that case. wood died 30 years ago sailing off catalina island. a top official with the sheriff's department say it's highly unlikely new ground will be broke on her death. her death is still considered an accident. coming up later on "cbs this morning," we'll chat with mitt romney and ron paul the day after the new hampshire primary. i'm terrell brown. this is the "cbs morning news." ing news. ♪
